There are two types of professional liability insurances policies and understanding each will help you determine which one is appropriate for your practice. These policies are Occurrence Policies and Claims-Made Policies. Each beneficial, depending on your needs and eligibility.
Occurrence Policies
Cover the insured for claims made about an event that took place during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is reported. As long as the policy was in effect when the alleged incident occurred, you will be covered, even if a claim is made years later.
Claims-Made Policies
Cover the insured against claims reported during the policy period, only. With this coverage, once the policy expires, the insurance company will not provide coverage for claims, unless you (the insured) purchased an Extended Reporting Endorsement (ERP or “Tail”).
